You've decided you want a dog - great decision!

Now the question will be what dog is right for you and whether or not you should purchase a dog from an ethical breeder or adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue.

That is a personal question that only you can answer - and each has it's advantages.

Shelter & Rescue Dogs

There are many wonderful dogs that need homes.  You can give a homeless dog a new  leash on life by adopting from the many fine shelters and rescues.  Most dogs obtained from shelters and rescues are spayed or neutered but if they are not, check with them for local spay/neuter clinics in your area.

Purebred Dogs

Should you decide to purchase a purebred dog be sure to buy it from an ethical breeder.  It is imperative that you check the breeder's references.  Ask for the name and phone number  of their vet , names, phone numbersof others who have bought dogs from the breeder in the past and others who have bought puppies from this breeder.

Whether you decide on a shelter/rescue dog or a purebred it is a good idea to take the dog to a vet imedicately to get it checked over.  In addition, if you are not going to breed the dog, it is advisable to have the dog spayed or neutered.
