The American Dog Owners Association was originally established in Detroit, Michigan in 1970 to combat illegal dog fighting and promote responsible ownership.

Maddie and LolaToday, the American Dog Owners Association, or the ADOA, has grown over the years to become the nation's oldest and largest member-based organization representing dog owners.

Supported entirely by members, the ADOA is an inclusive organization that spans the dog world, and is comprised of individual dog owners, local dog clubs and organizations, shelters and rescues, ethical home and hobby breeders, and statewide federations.

In addition, ADOA's membership represents literally hundreds of years of expertise in canine-related fields, including trainers, behaviorists, shelter experts, breed experts, animal control officers, law enforcement officers, attorneys, physicians, public health officials, and more.

The American Dog Owners Association celebrates the special bond between dogs and their owners, fights animal cruelty, dog fighting and abuse in all of its forms, educates the public, the media and legislators on responsible ownership and promotes standards for safe, civilized and humane treatment of dogs.

Most importantly, the ADOA supports appropriate, enforceable regulation for dog owners and advocates for meaningful public policy and legislation that truly protects the public health and safety, especially for our children.
